Heat pumps

Among the alternative and environmentally friendly heating systems, heat pumps deserve special attention. Although the idea of transferring thermal energy from a natural source with a low potential heat reserve (such as the ground, water, or air) to the end user first emerged in the 19th century, practical application of such pumps only began in the early 21st century. Currently, in Europe and the USA, energy-saving electric or ground source heat pumps for residential and commercial buildings have become commonplace. In Ukraine, they have only recently appeared on the market, but have already gained popularity.

What is needed for installing a heat pump

A heat pump is a type of transmitter that does not generate energy itself, but rather takes heat from the environment and transfers it to the water heating system. Therefore, to choose the appropriate heating device for a specific structure that will work successfully and pay off the investment in a short period of time, it is necessary to calculate the efficiency of the system, taking into account various factors:

• the area and purpose of the premises;
• the climatic conditions of the area;
• the presence of other types of heating and ventilation systems;
• the need to use it as an air conditioner.

Only a qualified and experienced specialist can handle such calculations, as well as the installation of the equipment.

Types and principles of operation of heat pumps

Heat pumps are divided into two types:

• absorption - based on an absorbent refrigerant;
• compression - operate on a traditional technology - compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator.

Types of systems can also vary:

1. Air-to-air heat pumps. Collects thermal energy from outdoor air. The system is easy to use, inexpensive, quickly heats up the premises and can function as a cooler in summer.
2. Water-to-water heat pumps. Works on the energy of groundwater or water bodies located nearby. Heats water for heating systems and for household needs. One of the most energy-efficient options.
3. Air-to-water heat pumps. Uses heat collected from the air to heat water in the building's heating system. Can be integrated into an already installed heating system.
4. Water-to-air heat pumps. The energy of water is used in the air heating system.
5. Ice-to-water heat pumps. Rarely used due to the use of very complex technologies.
6. Ground-to-water heat pumps. Heat from the ground is directed into the heating circuit through wells or collectors.
