Maritime containers are made of special corrosion-resistant steel and are hermetically sealed with multiple locks that can be sealed, making them extremely difficult to open. They have wide doors that facilitate the loading and unloading of goods and special "ears" for easy movement by cranes. Standard container sizes are:

• 20 feet long (a little over 6 meters);
• 40 feet long (12 meters);
• 45 feet long (almost 14 meters) for oversized cargoes;
• Width and height are about 2.5 meters.

The containers are very capacious; for example, 300 standard 50-kilogram sugar bags can fit into a 40-foot container. Therefore, they can transport either one well-packed very large item or a consolidated cargo from various shipments. Shipping cargo in this way creates a strong sense of confidentiality and reliability, as the container is closed and sealed at the point of departure and the seal is broken by the recipient at the point of delivery.

For maritime transport, there is no need to collect a pile of permits for each item; a single document - a bill of lading - is issued for the container, which contains complete information about the cargo and confirms the carrier's responsibility for delivering the cargo to the destination port.
